Ground Source Review: Northumberland Fire Stations - Northumberland County Council aim to make buildings more energy efficient

Seahouses Fire Station Site Progress: Up and running

The fire Station at Seahouses took longer to install the internals as the station did not have a 3 phase electricity supply, rather there is a 2 phase supply. As part of our MCS requirements Kensa contact the DNO to ensure the change in loading to the electricity demand will not effect the properties in the vicinity.

Rather than upgrade to a 3 phase supply it was decided to install a 24kW single phase compact twin to perform the heating load, the 24kW compact comes in both single and three phase. This makes the 24kW one of the largest outputting heat pumps able to run on single phase in the UK and ideally suited for rural installation.

A 6kW shoebox heat pump was installed to satisfy the hot water demand and offer extra capacity for the heating if required.

The installation was carried out by Oakes Energy Services and commissioned on 22/9/17.

The installation was handed over to the Fire Service and they already report an improvement in the station.

This now concludes Kensa’s first phase of works for Northumberland County Council.

  • Ground Source Review: Northumberland Fire Stations - Northumberland County Council aim to make buildings more energy efficient

Project in brief:

  • Three fire stations operated by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service;
  • Heated by electric night storage heaters which have reached the end of their useful life and need replacing;
  • A Kensa Twin Compact ground source heat pump system installed inside each station;
  • Borehole ground array;
  • Sequential installations to be completed in Summer 2018.
